On July 23, Megawati was elected as Indonesia’s third president. Megawati is closer to the army than her predecessor and embraces the tenets of army nationalism and monotheism and opposes concessions to the forces of independence in Aceh and West Papua. After being shocked by the loss of East Timor, the Indonesian army has decided that it will no longer allow any one region, either Aceh or West Papua, or another province to relocate from Indonesia and will take more determined military action against the separatists.
