A series of macro-substituted ferrocene triiodides were synthesized and characterized by the general formula (RC_5H_4) _2FeI_3. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, MS, paramagnetic resonance, Mossbauer spectroscopy and conductivity. The crystal structure of the compound [CH_2 (CH_2) _3C (2-CH_2C_5H_4N) C_5H_4] _2FeI_4 · H_2O was determined. The crystal belongs to the triclinic system with P-1 space group and the unit cell parameters are a = 0.9593 (1) 1.3999 (2), c = 1.4537 (2) nm.α = 109.64 (1), β = 97.25 (1), γ = 104.69 (1) ° .V = 1.7299 nm~3, M_r = 1030.13, D_x = / cm ~ 3 and Z = 2. The results showed that the substituted ferrocene was partially oxidized by iodine, resulting in the central metal iron showing a mixed valence state.
