The porphyrin maturity parameter (PMP) derived from the distribution of vanadium porphyrin is an excellent indicator that can be achieved by: (1) recognizing hydrocarbon generating zones from marine source rock extract; (2) Set the maturity of the source rock during oil discharge. The method of measuring PMP is economical, reliable and faster than previous methods and can therefore be used as a routine exploration tool. For marine organic matter, PMP may be a more reliable maturity marker than some conventional methods such as vitrinite reflectance. Conventional maturity parameters are mostly dominated by the action process, rather than kerogen conversion, which in turn is responsible for the evolution of PMP, which directly controls the formation of bitumen and accompanying kerogen thermal degradation. In this paper, the source rock bitumen in the Monterrey Formation (California waters), the source rocks of the Devonian Bakken Formation shale (the Weishidang Basin), and the source rock formations corresponding to the Miocene Monterrey Formation (San Joaquin Basin, California), describes the application of this method. In all the cases studied, PMP increased at the beginning of hydrocarbon generation and systematically and predictably increased with kerogen decomposition. For petroleum derived from high-kerogen kerogen, PMP can reflect the maturity of source rocks during oil discharge as long as they are not subjected to subsequent reservoir maturation or are not mixed with bitumen outside source rocks.
