According to the latest statistics in 1985, the incidence of male lung cancer has declined, reaching the lowest level of whites in 1977 and blacks since 1982. The decrease in incidence is consistent with the general decrease in male smokers. However, the incidence of female lung cancer continues to increase. Although the mortality rate of cancer in all age groups continued to increase, the mortality rate of young American male and female lung cancer decreased from 1973 to 1985. These figures are published by the National Cancer Society’s 1987 statistical report on the incidence, mortality, and survival of cancer in the United States from 1973 to 1985. The report also introduced the trends of data from 1950 to 1985, and discussed the relationship between these trends and major advances in cancer medicine during this period.
