Butanol has been shown to have great potential as a biofuel. On October 4, 2013, the new ASTM International Standard contains butanol, which can be blended with gasoline at a ratio of 1% to 12.5% (φ) for automotive ignition-type engine fuels. ASTM D7862-13, Specification for Butanol and Gasoline Blends for Automotive Ignition Engines, developed by the D02.A0 Sub-Committee as part of ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels and Lubricants Standards. ASTM D7862 establishes the performance requirements for butanol content, water content, acidity, inorganic chlorine, solvent cleaning gums, sulfur content and total sulfur, and test methods.
