High-density tungsten blocks were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The maximum relative density of the samples without addition of tantalum carbide was up to 96.4%. The highest relative density of samples with addition of tantalum carbide was 98.6%. The effects of tungsten powder size and tantalum carbide on densification and grain size of tungsten block were investigated. The results show that the smaller the initial tungsten powder particle size, the smaller the density of the prepared tungsten block and the smaller the average diameter of the crystal grain. The added tantalum carbide can play the role of activation sintering and grain refinement. The preparation of tungsten blocks with different particle sizes of tungsten powder has different trend of sintering shrinkage curve.
