In the next decade, GaAs MMICs may be the key to enabling EW systems to perform well at a fraction of the cost. In order to meet the mission requirements envisaged for the nineties (reaction times will be shortened to a few seconds) new EW technology is needed. Some EW systems, such as multi-level surface-to-air missiles, terrain following cruise missiles and various stealthy weapons, require more accurate and technically sophisticated than ever before. EW system engineers are expecting GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) to make the advanced EW systems they need over the next decade. At the system level, functional EW requirements mean adopting new interdependent circuits, modules and packaging technologies.
