Objective To investigate the effect of pregnant women with anemia in the third trimester on neonatal birth size, body weight, gestational age and one-minute Apgar score and to study the relationship between hemoglobin levels in pregnant women and serum iron levels in newborn umbilical cord blood. Methods Pregnant women and their newborn babies born in a hospital from December 2008 to August 2009 were enrolled in this study. A prospective historical cohort study was conducted to collect data on pregnant women ’s health during pregnancy, hospital delivery and pregnancy outcomes. Results The hemoglobin content of pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy was linearly correlated with the length, weight and gestational age of newborns. The birth weight of newborns in pregnant women with moderate and severe anemia was smaller than that of normal controls. With the aggravating degree of anemia in pregnant women, the incidence of premature birth and low birth weight of newborn babies is on the rise. Conclusion Pregnant women with anemia in late pregnancy, especially in moderate and severe anemia may have a negative impact on neonatal pregnancy outcome.
