Nowadays, English writing is very important in ESL teaching, but it is also a headache and the weakest part for most of the non--English major students. What is the best and efficient way to motivate the students' interests in English writing and im-prove their writing skill? According to the survey among the second-year non-English major students in YAU, I find that most of the writing teachers commonly adopt the product approach, which focuses on the product of writing, emphasize on the error of forms (grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and spelling) and disregard the students' initiative in discovering and exploring the con-tent. As a result, the students still make the same errors that have been corrected by the teacher again and again, but the contents are vague and general. How can the writing teacher help the students to develop their capability of discovering content? They may ap-ply the process approach in the writing teaching which stresses the content and can help the students to discover what they want to say in their composition.
