在毛主席“备战、备荒、为人民”的伟大战略方针指引下,几年来,周家四队不断扩大冬小麦种植面积,变一年一熟为一年两熟,产量稳步上升。1965年以前小麦亩产只有200多斤,1970年上升到497斤,今年亩产721斤。周家四队位于辽东半岛南端的渤海海滨。年降水量650毫米左右,多分布在7～8月份,冬春雨雪稀少,地势比较平坦,土质肥沃(属粘质壤土)。有水塘1座,基本上实现了水利化。这个队几年来冬小麦连年增产的主要经验是:
