This article provides an overview of the upgrading process of electric drive diesel locomotives in Australia and the United States, as well as the comparison of the main structural features and performance parameters of locomotives of various generations. In the United States, diesel locomotives have entered the third generation and are still in the second generation in Australia. The author demonstrates the necessity of using the third generation locomotive technology to shorten the service life of existing locomotives and speed up the upgrading from the aspects of fuel cost, maintenance cost, labor cost and investment cost of maintenance equipment in railway operation.
