“Cathedral” is the title story of a collection named Cathedral by American writer Raymond Carver who has enjoyed a great reputation in world literature history. It. Since the publication, the collection has received much interpretation, most of which concentrate on the writing techniques. Few scholars pay attention to the reader's role in the text. And due to the discussion on the collection, the short fiction “Cathedral” is rarely involved. So this paper aims to specialize in analyzing “Cathedral” from the perspective of Wolfgang Iser's reader-response theory. Encompassing his concept of “Blank”, the paper aims to analyze the existence of character and plot blanks to view how the interaction between the text and readers is stimulated.
