在南部大平原的棉花产区,风蚀较为严重.秋季在休闲行播种覆盖作物可减轻风蚀.在1984年和1985年的9、10.11月分别播种了冬小麦、冬大麦、冬燕麦、冬黑麦、冬黑小麦、饲料高粱、珍珠稗、两种春黑小麦、3种春燕麦、3种春大麦和一种冬豌豆等16种作物,调查分析了地面覆盖度、植株高度及1~2月化学除草后地面覆盖的损失率.9月播种,各种作物在1月都能很好覆盖地面或达到一定的生长高度防止土壤侵蚀;10月播种,只有饲料高粱和珍珠稗两种作物表现较差;11月播种,则没有一种作物能很好覆盖地面.就以最少的土壤水分利用而最大限度地保护土壤而言,3种春大麦最好;饲料高粱和珍珠稗如果在9月初播种.表现也较好.9月播种的作物,除3种小谷类外,其它品种在化学杀除地面覆盖后,5月中旬覆盖率仍有60%以上;10月播种,只有冬大麦和春黑小麦在5月中旬覆盖率大于或等于50%.
