To counter the growing submarine invasion of the territorial waters, the Swedish Navy explores a new, dedicated weapon system that must be able to force the submarine to surface without destroying it. As a result, Elma was developed in the early 1980s and entered its actual service in 1984. This system was later called the ASW 600, and succeeded on the improved system ASW 601. When either system is used as part of an EW system, it is called EWS-900E. A modified ASW 601 with a launch tube diameter of 127mm was developed called Alecto as the small frigate Visby entered service in May 2001.
