When Xu Xiao-chun, a 54-year-old senior engineer, was appointed director of the Beijing Dyeing and Finishing Plant in a semi-shutdown state, his wife was immediately fainting because of his fear. His relatives and friends decided he was “a big mistake” in assuming his position. However, in eight months, Xu Xiaochun detached the dying factory with 3,200 employees and set an example for China’s industrial enterprises. His success even aroused the attention of Premier Zhao Ziyang, not long ago, Premier Zhao inspected the factory, praising their experience. In an interview with Xinhua News Agency recently, the textile expert who graduated from the university in 1957 attributes his success to the factory director responsibility system that is currently in widespread use in China. He proved this with his two different experiences as a plant manager.
