20世纪三、四十年代,中国战火不断,民不聊生,大批粤剧艺人远渡重洋,赴北美大陆演艺谋生,以旧金山为中心的北美粤剧遂成燎原之势。但由于受到战争及世界性经济萧条的影响,北美粤剧艺人的生存境况大多不佳。他们或因行情不熟而上当受骗,或因无钱养家而兼职副业,或被征入伍而因祸得福。粤剧艺人舞台背后的遭遇,真实地反映了乱世之秋海外粤剧艺人的生存境况。
In the 1930s and 1940s, China continued its war of flames and its people were insecure. A large number of Cantonese opera performers traveled far and wide to the North American mainland for their livelihood. The North American and Cantonese opera with the center of San Francisco became a prairie fire. However, due to the impact of the war and the worldwide economic downturn, the living conditions of North American Cantonese opera artists are mostly poor. They are either fooled because they are unfamiliar with the market or they are bailed out by part-time side job because they have no money to support their families or have been recruited into the army. The tragedy behind the stage of the Cantonese opera artist truly reflects the living conditions of overseas Cantonese opera performers in troubled times.
