芡实,因其露出水面的部分形似鸡头,故俗称"鸡头果",果实称为"鸡头米"。芡实是一种喜温性水生蔬菜,不耐霜冻和干旱;春季萌发,夏季开花结果,秋季收获,冬季果落叶败;全生育期200天左右。芡实是滨湖圩内及低洼地区发展避洪农业的高产、优质、高效经济作物,集食用、药用、保健于一体,市场畅销,具有良好的经济效益和发展潜力。安徽省天长市种植芡实已有200多年历史,被誉为"芡实之乡",芡实已经成为天长市特色农业发展的一张亮丽名片。
