British journalism has seen little change in twenty-five years. The British, though renowned for their ideological tradition, are proud of it. But in the face of the status quo in the newspapers, even the British are impatient. The Economist weekly said in an editorial earlier this year that the nine national newspapers read by British readers twenty-five years ago had a total circulation of 15 million copies. It is still these nine daily newspapers, with a modest increase in total circulation, with seven newspapers losing money. Only the popular Daily Mirror and The Sun are profitable.
