义和团事件是历史的,也是现代的。近年来西方学者掀起了对义和团事件再度认识的潮流,影响了中国学界的话语走向。沟通义和团事件历史性和现代性的媒介除却西方强势话语权力以外,还有将历史寓言化与故事隐喻化的途径。义和团的故事本身就有戏剧性,它隐括了经典悲剧的全过程,再现了悲剧的所有细节。自然灾难是义和团运动兴起的基点,对洋教洋人的妖魔化是义和团故事生发悲剧对立面的动力。暴力主义的复活,构成了义和团代言的农民式古典精神抗争近代强势力量的绝响。义和团运动还是现代文化观念的参照物,其富有华北地域色彩的极端民族主义行为,对近世以来大型的戏剧性群众运动有影响。
The Boxer Incident is historical as well as modern. In recent years, Western scholars set off a trend of re-understanding of the Boxers, which has affected the discourse of Chinese academics. In addition to the powerful power of discourse in the West, the medium of communicating historic and modern issues of the Boxer incident also has a metaphorical way of metaphoricalizing historical allegory and story. The story of the Boxers itself is dramatic. It hides the whole process of the classic tragedy and reproduces all the details of the tragedy. Natural disasters are the starting point for the rise of the Boxer Rebellion. The demonization of foreigners of foreign cultures is the motivation for the tragedy opposite of the Boxer Stories. The resurgence of violence constitutes the perfect response to the classical strength of the peasant-type representatives of the Boxers in their fight against the mighty forces in the modern age. The Boxer Rebellion is also a reference to modern cultural concepts. Its extreme nationalist behavior, rich in the color of North China, has an impact on the large-scale dramatic mass movement in the modern age.
