朱光潜的文学理论观点在 1936年左右发生了某种重要转向 ,由于时代环境以及自身学术研究的进展 ,他从以“直觉论”为基础的个体表现论的诗学走向了文化诗学的探索 ,他致力于探讨民族文学传统形式的源流 ,认为只有接通凝聚了民族共同情感的文学形式传统 ,新文学才有可能获得强大的生命力。因此 ,文学的形式创造动力在于文化 ,但是 ,只有情感性的文化才能成为诗学的文化 ,而诗人的作用就在于创造一种情感性的诗学文化 ,由此他提出并实践了一种人格—风格论批评
