2000年3月17日,时代集团正式宣布,其下属的《生活》(Life)杂志将在5月后停刊。其母公司会以《生活》名称继续出书,遇上特别事件则发行《生活》杂志特别纪念版,估计一年内只会出版几次。这已经是《生活》第二次停刊了。1972年《生活》第一次停刊时,有人把它喻为“西方新闻界的陨星”。如今这颗曾璀璨一时的明星,其印刷版或许是永远地陨落了。 生逢其时 《生活》并不是美国第一家全部采用照片的画报,1896年,《纽约时报》就已开始每周出版一期摄影增刊,其他报纸也竞相模仿。曾成功创办了《时代》周刊(1923年)与《财富》月刊(1930年)的亨利·卢斯,终于在1936年11月23日创办了一份新颖的以图片见长的杂志——《生活》。他在创刊时写了下列宗旨:

When Life was stopped for the first time in 1972, some people called it “a meteorite in Western press.” Now this brilliant star, its print version may have fallen forever. At the very time, “living” was not the first full-fledged pictorial newspaper in the United States. In 1896, the New York Times began publishing a photographic supplement once a week, and other newspapers were also racing to imitate. Henry Luce, who founded The Weekly (1923) and Fortune (1930) monthly magazines, finally founded a novel, photo-rich magazine on November 23, 1936, “Life ”.
