I. Overview The geotechnical and construction sectors have been looking for a kind of economical and innovative retaining structure that is convenient for various construction projects. There are many regions in the world that use this kind of anchor plate retaining structure. In particular, in China, more than 30 such large-scale structures have been constructed for railway abutments or highway abutments (Figs. 1 and 2) and retaining buildings (Fig. 3) in the past ten years. This structure usually includes concrete baffles, lacing, anchor plates, columns, and backfill (see Figure 4). This kind of structure can easily reach the required height if it is graded and constructed, and the construction cost is more economical than the conventional retaining wall. For example, the construction of a 10-meter-high railway abutment using an anchor-supported soil structure requires only RMB 20,000 for the construction cost.
