从二十世纪三十年代开始,来楚生钻研肖形印的创作,其《然犀室肖形印存》的印行是中国印学史上的创举。来楚生肖形印博观约取而宗秦法汉,在汉代深沉雄大、质朴自然的艺术作品及浪漫主义艺术精神的滋养下,创作出极具艺术特色的肖形印。来楚生以其庄严典重的佛像印、栩栩然而活泼泼的生肖印以及其他品类丰富的肖形印而卓然名家,成为当代肖形印图式、取法、使用功能以及理论构架的开拓者。
