  在提倡和谐社会的今天越来越多的韩国电视连续剧在中国播映, 受到中国观众的喜爱, 原因何在? 它与西方电视连续剧有何不同? 请看下文。
Last year, more than 13 Korean(韩国) TV series were introduced into China. Turn on the TV, and Korean beauties are appearing during Peak Viewing times. Some of the dramas are being repeated, but audience continue to watch them. Why are the South Korean TV series loved by so many Chinese people? Cheng Yiting, a student from East China Normal University, gives us her reasons. She thinks that the good-looking actors with cool clothes and the beautiful sight in the dramas are the selling points for South Korean TV dramas. But what attracted the young audience most is the pure and moving love stories.
And it seems that South Korean TV series have also won the hearts of middle-aged people. They are touched by the morals in the shows. These include the importance of respecting elders and social order. Though some people think South Korean TV series are too slow and too long, most of the Chinese audience like them. Maybe we are really tired of Western TV series. Compared with that, South Korean TV series are not bad.

I happened to be in London last summer on the very day Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third book in the madly popular series by J.K. Rowling, was published. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. I rushed to the bookstore to buy a copy, knowing this simple act would put me up there with the best grandmas in the world. The book was still months away from publication in the United States, and I have an 8-year-old grandson who is a big Harry Potter fan.
It’s a good thing that children enjoy books, isn’t it? Most of us think so. But like many children’s books these days, the Harry Potter series have recently come under fire. Parents who feel that the books support interest in the occult(神秘的事物) have called for their taking away from classrooms and school libraries.
I’m not exactly unfamiliar with this line of thinking, having had various books of mine banned from schools over the last 20 years.
The real danger is not in the books, but in laughing off those who would ban them. The protests against Harry Potter follow a tradition that has been growing since the early 1980’s and often leaves school principals (校长) trembling with fear that is then passed down to teachers and librarians.
What began with the religious right has spread to the politically correct. And now the gate is open so wide that some parents believe they have the right to demand immediate taking away of any book for any reason from school or classroom libraries.
