Voltage-gated protons (H +) channels are found in many human and animal tissues and play an important role in cell defense against acid stress. However, the identification of these unique ion channels at the molecular level has so far not been successful. This article describes a 191 amino acid protein obtained by xeno-expression that is indistinguishable from native H + channels. This protein is derived from the gene NOH-1
