The Advanced SensorDemonstration program of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to take the current level of space sensor technology one step further. The purpose of this program is to use second-generation infrared sensor technology in advanced spacecraft. The spacecraft will be launched into geosynchronous orbit in 1988 and will last for more than two and a half years. It carries sensors that include a telescope with a filter whose focal plane is “staring” rather than scanning for a wide field of view, and remains Clyogenic. A single processor controls the entire system and translates focal plane data into target tracking information for small terrestrial terminals. The overall assembly of the sensor is expected to enable operational space sensors to track selected targets anywhere in the world, perform strategic and tactical air combat, and fleet air defense missions.
