武钢4号高炉于1984年7月10日停炉大修,同年10月31日开始第二代炉役。由于炉腹冷却壁严重破损,订于1988年12月进行一次中修。这一代炉身寿命为50个月。在第一代大修期间进行了不少项目的技术改造,例如风口数目由24个增加到28个,死铁层厚度由700毫米增到1100毫米等。但是一些工程量较大的项目,如无料钟炉顶、热风炉采用陶瓷燃烧器等,因受施工时间和资金的限制,未能进行改造。4号高炉开炉四年来的生产实践表明:采用的先进工艺和设备,在4号高炉强化冶炼上发挥了积极作用。同时,也看到提高设计质量、避免失误,对提高生产水平、改善技术经济指标有十分重要的作用。近几年来,在冶炼工艺方面积极采用先进技术,使高炉的生产面貌发生了显著变化。
