In the early hours of May 9, 1972, U.S. President Nixon announced in the White House’s video camera a U.S. government decision that the United States will carry out large-scale deployment of mines in its northern coastal port and inland waterways in order to implement a comprehensive maritime blockade. An hour later, more than 40 U.S. Navy A-6A and A-7E carrier-based aircraft dropped a large amount of mines on parachutes in the coastal areas of Vietnam such as Haiphong, Guang’an and Hongji.
