一般认为,老舍在其戏剧创作中曾出现两个高峰期,第一次是在1937年抗战爆发以后,这期间主要以抗战题材的剧本为主;第二次是中华人民共和国成立以后,主要特征是着力描写新中国人民的精神风貌,歌颂美好,鞭挞邪恶。但是老舍在其两次创作高峰期间的作品有一个共同的特点,那就是极大的爱国情怀,可以说,正是这种情怀激发了老舍的无限创作激情,使他为人类留下了不朽的剧作。
