元旦是我国人民的传统佳节,辛亥革命以前为农历岁首,新中国成立前夕,改于公历1月1日。从历法的角度看,它表示了一年的起始,从人们的社会活动看,它又历来带有诸多政治色彩,显然是科学与政治的共同产物。相传五帝时期,颛顼以正月为元,初一为旦。这就表明我国早在四千多年前就以正月初一作为一年的开始了。从汉字的象形特点而言,"元旦"则是天地间一幅壮丽的画卷。《说文》释"元"为"始"、解"旦"曰:"日见一上,一地也。"新年
