Hydropower development often triggers a conflict between technological economy and the environment. A practical method for determining the site location of a hydropower station is presented, with selected sites meeting the requirements of economic and environmental objectives. To ensure accuracy, two evaluations of the entire river network have been carried out technically and ecologically. In order to identify hydropower projects that are economically and environmentally sustainable, a GIS program is used to assess the properties of the entire river network. The methodology used in Austria, the identification of potential for hydropower capacity expansion, and the impact of existing hydropower stations and river regulation are presented.
