在农业科技不发达的古代,农业收成的好坏,直接影响着人们的生活。而农业丰收主要依靠大自然,自古以来历代统治者和农民往往都把丰收的愿望寄托于神灵,因此,在年关节令转换的时刻,就逐渐形成占卜农事丰歉、祈求免除灾害、避祸得福等习俗,尽管这些农事信仰有不同程度的不科学成分,但它所反映的民俗心理却是共同的。西夏农民在长期的生产活动中也形成了许多禳灾祭礼的习俗。
