Zhang Xiangquan, a crop scientist at Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, developed the first cold-tolerant winter wheat cultivar TBT6 using the stepwise recurrent selection method and passed the appraisal in Tianjin in May 1993. TBT6 was based on the male sterility strain of sterile wheat.
