This article introduces the design structure and performance characteristics of the 50A electric drive diesel locomotive developed by the electromechanical department (EMD) of GM of the United States in 1984. It should be noted that EMD developed the 50 Series Year in the late 1970s, namely the GP50 locomotive and the SD50 locomotive. Both vehicles were put into mass production in 1980 and 1981 respectively. Shortly after the 50 series locomotives were put on the market, EMD immediately started to update the research and development of locomotives. At the 16th Pan-American Railway Conference in Washington in September 1984, EMD officially launched its newest generation of 60 series locomotives. About the 60 series locomotive, we published a brief report in the 5th and 8th of 1985, and the 50A locomotive described in this article is probably the prototype of the 60 series locomotive. Editor GM company 50 series locomotive replacement product prototype car will be made in 1984, and in early 1985 on-site test. The new locomotive will be equipped with the newly developed Model 710G two-stroke turbocharged diesel engine EMD (Electric Power Division) and computer controls including the Superseries wheel creep control system and an improved traction motor. Locomotive with 16-cylinder 710G diesel engine rated traction power will be 3800 horsepower (2833kW). These locomotives will have the following features: Significantly improved efficiency and fuel economy; Significant traction power; Greater sustained traction at full power; Less maintenance; Microprocessor-equipped diagnostic unit. The design criteria for Model 50A locomotives are of high quality and reliability, which are essential to meeting the U.S. railway requirements of the 1980s.
