“惊诧”,是一种特定感情的表露:大概是由于意想不到的情况,引出了无比惊奇的感情,既奔涌于心间,又流露于嘴脸。《“友邦惊诧”论》中所摘引的蒋介石授意的那则通电特别指出:“友邦人士,莫名惊诧”。看来洋大人的惊奇感情是格外奔放的,远远超过一般,已经惊奇到了说不出的地步了。可是,触发他们的媒介却是这样微不足道;学生请愿当中出现的“一点纷扰”。因“一点纷扰”而“莫名惊诧”,洋大人这番不同凡响的表现是大可玩味的:此“惊诧”真耶,假耶? “Surprised” is the expression of a specific emotion: probably due to unexpected circumstances, elicited extremely surprising feelings, both rushing in the heart, but also revealing in the face.
