This article discusses reentry of the space shuttle derived carrier delivery system. The spacecraft derived carrier used the basic components of the space transportation system in an unmanned carrier system structure. Those high-cost components (mainly propulsion and electronics subsystems) are housed in a re-entry and reuse cabin. The characteristics of re-entry are determined by the spread of the landing point and the requirements of the lateral maneuvering flight. The ballistic structure was initially evaluated and the lift structure was selected to determine the expected re-entry environment and to explore the thermal protection materials used in re-entry design. The article also introduces the characteristics of reentry bay and its internal sectional view.
