在小说《维莱特》中,沉默寡言、间接含蓄、欲言又止是其叙事方法上最为显著的特点。本文从三个方面,即小说开头的间接含蓄、整篇小说的间接含蓄——贯穿整部小说的暗喻、和小说结尾的间接含蓄,来分析其叙事方法上的间接含蓄、欲言又止。由于勃朗特和女主人公露西.斯诺一样,都有着悲惨的经历和充满伤痛的过去,这些伤痛太过惨痛而使人不愿直接提及,所以夏洛蒂.勃朗特才通过女主人公露西.斯诺的叙述,间接含蓄、欲言又止地讲述她的故事。而叙事方法上的间接含蓄、欲言又止正是理解小说《维莱特》的关键。
