The attenuation of near-field ground motions was studied using 3 stations records of shallow earthquakes occurring within 12km of MN1.0 ~ 3.1, near Sudbury, Ontario within 30km from the source. This is of great significance for the study of the earthquake prediction equations in the eastern part of North America and for the estimation of source parameters based on regional seismic observations. We have obtained the result that the horizontal component of the high frequency (3 ~ 10Hz) vibration in 25 ~ 30km away from the hypocenter attenuates with the geometric diffusivity of R-1.3 (where R is the source distance). This is in agreement with the geometrical diffusivity, as determined by Atkinson (2004) and predicted by Atkinson and Boore (2006). The vertical components of earthquakes within this distance range seem to decay at a slightly lower rate of R-1.1.
