Peking University Press: Aim at the International Market and Establish an International Brand

  According to the brand positioning of Peking University Press’ academic and educational publishing, our press attach high importance on high-end academic writings about humanities and social sciences and TCFL (teaching Chinese as foreign language) textbooks in the project of going global. So far, these two types of books rank top two in copyright output and book export and these books have high brand awareness in overseas markets and foreign counterparts.
  Take advantage of other ships to go global. Cooperate with world-class academic presses to establish international brands of Beijing University Press’ outstanding academic books
  To take advantage of other ships must find the right and good ship. In selecting partners, our press’ guiding principle is to “select key partners to deepen cooperation". In selecting fields of publishing, we actively seek opportunities to cooperate with the world-class publishers to rely on their professional publishing teams, huge markets and brand resources which ensure that the high quality of the books of our press' exported copyrights.
  For example, in 2005 the press established a good relationship with the Brill Academic Press which had the intention to tap into Chinese market. Our press successively exported a number of cultural and historical academic monographs such as (History of Chinese Contemporary Literature), (Tradition and Modernity), (Touching the history and the Approach of May Fourth Movement) and (Eighteen Volumes of Dunhuang studies) to Brill Academic Press, and translated them into English to enter the high-end academic book markets in western counties. Among these books, (History of Chinese Contemporary Literature Press) is the first translated and published Chinese works published by Brill. With price as high as 130 dollars, it has been reprinted within six months and subsequently launched paperback edition. The success of the book made Brill have great confidence to continue translating and publishing Chinese books
  Cambridge University Press is one of the key partners of our press. Since 2009 it has signed contracts for(China Economic Issue),(History of Chinese Civilization),(History of Modern Chinese Literature Development),(Literati through the Ages Dreaming to be Swordsmen)and other books of the same series. The English-language version of (History of Chinese Civilization)is the one of the first patch of books selected by "Chinese Library of Cambridge", as well as the firstly-published key works of the “library series”. On the first debut day in 2012 London Book Fair, this book became the highlight of the book fair. After the publishing of China Economic Issues, Cambridge University Press’ professional sales team actively corresponded with Mr. Lin Yifu’ schedule to promote the book on a global scale, as a result it had sold more than 2800 copies after being published for six months.   In 2012, our press signed contract with Springer to output Understanding of Chinese Firms from Multiple Perspective, Foresighted Leading: Practice and Thinking on China's Regional Economic Development, Political Connection: The Development of Private Entrepreneurs and Enterprises, Toward balanced Growth with Economic Agglomeration: Empirical Study of China's Urban-Rural and Interregional Development and a series of academic monographs for studying China's contemporary economic development.
  The influential Press unites with another influential press, choose influential counterpart publishers in the field to jointly promote press’ TCFL (teaching Chinese as foreign language) materials enter into the international mainstream markets.
  Peking University Press has a long history of publishing TCFL textbooks, so it has a complete product line for the TCFL products and a team of authors. The TCFL books published by Peking University press enjoy a good reputation in the markets both at home and abroad, and have basically established certain brand awareness. The TCFL books is an important category of the output of our press’ copyrights, and especially popular in Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia and other traditional areas covered and affected by Chinese. With the western countries' growing interest in learning Chinese language, our press also actively develops markets in North America, Australia etc. in recent years. Our books are accepted in these emerging markets, what’s more, some of them have been adopted the mainstream schools in the day-to-day teaching.
  In the Korea market where Chinese learning is popular, our press maintains long-term and close cooperation with Jiji Press, Toyo Bunko, Multi-Park etc. engaged in Chinese learning, training and publishing. So, the TCFL books published by Peking University Press not only can enter into the mainstream markets, but often rank among the top best-sellers.
  Currently, the Chinese Language and Culture Course is not only used in many Chinese schools around the world, but also designated as textbooks in nine school districts in the United States. The Mei Zhou Chinese is adopted by many immersive teaching schools. I love Learning Chinese’s teaching method is originated from TPRS teaching methods commonly used in the Foreign Language Teaching in United States. And this method is applied by many schools which adopts TPRS pedagogy. Boya Chinese’ speaking series are applied by some universities such as Stanford University in the United States, Russia, Spain, Japan, South Korea and other countries. Many Chinese readings such as (My Storiette about Chinese Learning), Chinese Breeze, Lili's Wonderland are welcomed by many schools and readers from around the world.   Value the authors, and enhance the international reputation of Chinese authors / scholars with high-quality publications.
  For publishers, author resource is one of the most important resources. Thus establishing the Peking University Press version’s international brand awareness is complementary to enhancing the international recognition of authors. Peking University Press has a group of the best scholars as our authors. They have international influence, as well as a wide range of international contacts which helps to promote the translation and publication of the books. They also often attach great importance to the publication of their own writings at abroad. In the process of outputting copyrights, we cooperate closely with authors to integrate book publishing with academic exchanges organically. While translating and publishing Chinese academic works, we also introduced a group of Chinese scholars to overseas readers, which not only established the brand Chinese publications, but also establish the brand of the Chinese academy.
  For example, after the publication of the China Economic Issues, we immediately recommended it to the Cambridge University Press. When they found the author is Mr. Lin Yifu, they soon decided to purchase the copyright and paid substantial royalty prepayments. The English version of the book further promoted the copyright output of other languages. So far, it has exported the copyright of the English, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Traditional Chinese and other languages, to further expand author’s influence in a global scale.
  In future work, our press will continue to be based on the two key areas of outstanding academic works and TCFL textbooks, to strengthen brand building of "Peking University Press Version” in the international market. Based on highlighting existing strengths, we need to organize with emphasis a series of excellent books which not only reflect core values of socialism with Chinese characteristics and China's contemporary achievements in various fields, but also suitable for overseas market demand and can be accepted by the international mainstream readers.
