On October 17, 1989, at 05:04 local time, San Francisco, the metropolitan area on the west coast of the United States, was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake near the city of Santa Cruz, about 90-100 km southeast of San Francisco . 62 people were killed, 3 208 were injured and about 55,000 people were affected.
