Screening of wood decaying bacteria suitable for pulp and paper industry, due to different uses, need different strains. This article evaluated whether 278 species of South African wood rot fungi were suitable for pretreatment of sulphate-based softwood pulp. The effects of these bacteria on the kappa number, yield and strength properties of the pulp were evaluated. Many of these strains are more effective at reducing kappa than the commonly used Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. Six species of Stereum hirsutum and an unidentified bacterium significantly reduced kappa number without significantly affecting pulp yield. Wood chips were treated with two S. hirsutums, a Peniophora sp., And an unidentified bacterium, improving the strength properties of the finished paper.
