This study reviews the history of library informatics on whether a unit of information is consciously or unconsciously divided. Based on the information recently proposed by Liang Zhi, this study examines the possibility of subdividing units of information and proposes that information units include at least works and works Chapters and the thematic sections of the works, pointing out that although library information occupations most often adopt the “work” unit of information, many activities can use other information units at the same time in order to improve information query and acquisition efficiency; The thesis of “Back to the fundamentals again” shows the concrete examples of the above three types of information units and the metadata results produced by organizing the information in different units. The article points out that in the future, the third-level information units can be validated through a wider range of empirical studies to examine the applicability and effectiveness of different units to different occupational activities and to summarize and classify the forms of the smallest information units (thematic fragments of works).
