Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and type 2 (HIV-1, HIV-2) are considered as the cause of AIDS and its related diseases. Because of the low incidence of free virus in the blood circulation and the small number of infected cells, it is more difficult to measure HIV in the blood directly. An in vitro DNA amplification technique called polymerase chain reaction has been used to detect HIV proviral sequences in infected individuals. This article describes the principle of polymerase chain reaction and its application in the detection of these viruses.
