Glaciers may seem quiet and majestic, but when they start to melt, they can really become very noisy. A new study shows that, as the glaciers melted, the ancient air bubbles hidden inside the glaciers escaped into the water and even emitted more noise than those under the ocean, hit by torrential rain and set off a 6-meter wave. The researchers analyzed data from underwater sensors in three glaciers linked to the sea and found that the noise lasted throughout the year, with the loudest frequency of 1 to 3 kilohertz, almost two of the highest pianos Octave. Experiments by the research team showed that the noise would not pause as bubbles were rising in the water or when the bubbles were broken after they reached the water surface.
