The United Nations convened a special AIDS conference on June 25-27, 2001. For the first time, world leaders and senior officials came together to discuss the fight against AIDS, a disease that poses a threat to all mankind. Some 30 heads of state or government attended the meeting, and some countries also sent ministers to attend the meeting. In addition, about 350 non-governmental organizations were represented. Luis Fréchette, UN Under-Secretary-General, pointed out that this special session of the UN General Assembly was held on the occasion of growing social concern over AIDS. In the past half year, the international community has undergone fundamental changes in its actions on AIDS. Before that, everyone was aware of the AIDS crisis.
