Chain vibrations and noise come from the up and down movement of chain and sprocket when engaged (Chordal action). The chord effect changes the linear velocity of the chain and the angular velocity of the sprocket, causing the sprocket to hit the sprocket teeth. Newer silent chains use a concept known as pitch compensation to effectively increase the pitch at which it engages the sprocket, thereby reducing chord and impact loads. Silent chain through the concentric pin and rocker joints to adjust its pitch (see photo). Prior to engagement, the pin and rocker surfaces make contact at a point below the link line, and when engaged, the rocker rolls up the pin to move the point of contact upward, thereby increasing the pitch and the amount of extension approximating Equal to the chain around the pitch circle sprocket needs.
