Advances in Compressor Technology by Computers Recognized in the four papers on simulations (respectively by Wambsganss and Cohen, Touber, Najork, Maclaren and Kerr) at the 1967 International Conference on Refrigeration in Madrid. This paper summarizes the development history since the advent of the computer simulation model of the displacement compressor mentioned above. It relates to the improvement of mathematical description of the valve and compressor running pipe network and the fast and accurate numerical calculation of the equation. Using digital calculations to reach only half the actual distance of the best design, the combination of model and optimization techniques takes only the first step, but ultimately it will be the only way to go. It can be expected that with the increasing capacity of computers, the further study of the valve reliability considering the bending and impact stress and the scientific design of the valve are necessary. The use of computers in high-speed data acquisition systems is also described. The system accurately and conveniently receives, processes and outputs experimental data from compressor operations that are essential for assessing the effectiveness of simulation and optimization techniques. Data acquisition systems have progressed so rapidly over the past decade that they have been credited with the achievements made since the first Purdue Compressor Technology Symposium (1972). The paper ends with a large amount of new information obtained by the exchange of compressor designers with the aid of computers. I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to Purdue for its contribution to providing a good forum for disseminating this information.
