Conventional alkaline Zn-air batteries cause spontaneous discharge due to the instability of the anode Zn in the concentrated alkaline electrolyte. To overcome this problem, the use of a neutral electrolyte as an alternative to an alkaline electrolyte may be promising because the anode Zn has a high stability in a neutral solution. However,a key issue in the normal operation of a neutral Zn-air battery is how to ensure that the cathode catalyst can effectively electrocatalyze the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in a neutral solution. Here,we report a simple preparation of CoNi doped C-N/CNT nanocomposite catalyst(CoNi/C-N/CNT)by pyrolysis of a mixture of nickel salt, cobalt salt, carbon nanotube, dicyandiamide and ethylenediamine.Among the synthesized catalysts, the Co3Ni2/C-N/CNT45has a high and stable ORR current density of 6.2 mA cm-2in 0.5 mol·L-1KNO3 solution..Neutral Zn-air battery with the CoNi/C-N/CNT composites coating on carbon paper as an air electrode and metal Zn as an anode was assembled in a 0.5 mol·L-1 KNO3 solution. For the catalyst Co3Ni2/C-N/CNT45,the neutral Zn-air battery presents an open circuit voltage of 1.16 V and a maximum power density of 49.1 mW·cm-2.
