As excellent inorganic electrochromic materials, tungsten oxide films have enormous potential applications in transportation, energy fields. However, the electrochromic time needs to be shortened and the optical switching range should be further improved for practical applications. Here tungsten oxide films with three-dimensional macroporous structures were prepared through colloidal template-assisted sol-gel method. Results show that the electrochromic performance in the infrared wave region is highly enhanced and the response time is greatly decreased due to the facilitation provided by the ordered multi-layer interconnected porous structure for the diffusion of ions/electrons and multi-refraction of lights. These results highlight their applications in transportation fields as optical switching windows and anti glare rearview mirrors for energy-saving and safety.
