Semiconductor nanorods have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, due to the polarized absorption and emission along their long axis. To ensure optimal functionality of their ordered arrays, reliable methods to align these nanocrystals are needed. [1] We present an approach towards two-dimensional arrangement of highly-emissive CdSe/CdS core-shell nanorods, which combines the concept of self-assembly with the long-range orientation by photoalignment. This has been realised by employment of a multilayered thin film system, consisting of sulfonic azo dye (SD1) in the bottom layer and the nanorods embedded in a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) matrix, forming the top layer. By irradiating SD1 with linear polarized blue light (=450 nm), these molecules align perpendicular to the polarization plane of the incoming light, which results in high quality alignment of the LCP.
